About Us

Phatboyz Smokehouse and Kitchen is renowned for low and slow barbequing, meats coated
in house made rubs and sauces bringing all the flavours from Texas, South Carolina and
Memphis, catering and custom smokers, not to mention true American portions, Phat Boyz
Smoking was established in 2017.


We are a legendary restaurant in regional Ipswich with sell-out barbeque dishes from
briskets and pulled pork, ‘mac n’ cheese’ and our signature BBQ maple wings. A family
restaurant where the locals can walk over to share a meal with friends and family, we are
kid and dog friendly. It’s a casual vibe with seating inside although majority is located
outside with an adjoining casual grassed beer garden, to chill and listen to music on
weekends. The crown jewel in the 100-seat restaurant is the bespoke smoker five metres
long off the adjoining dining area for diners and spectators to see.

Our History

Phat Boyz Smoking was founded by chief pit-master Luke Moonshine, in 2014 Luke found
his passion for Texas Style Low n Slow BBQ. By 2017 after endless cooks to perfect his own
style of cooking Moonshine turned that passion into an opportunity and established
Phatboyz Smoking, an online retail store operated from his shed. By the end of 2018
Phatboyz experienced exponential growth from opening the Retail and Catering arm of the business winning multiple awards for their delicious delights and manufacturing Phat Boyz
own range of Rubs and Sauces.


Again, exploding with popularity and a booming social media following the demand for
Phatboyz kept growing, leading to the opening of the destination smokehouse – Phatboyz
Smokehouse and Kitchen in 2021, serving thousands of people weekly with all the
traditional low and slow favourites with some creative smoked twists. Phatboyz further
expanded their presence nationally at Meatstock events in 2022, Australia’s largest BBQ
festival. Soon after Moonshine, travelled as a guest Pitmaster with the festivals around the
country and internationally in New Zealand and Brazil.


With the love for fire, smoke, meat and admiring live fire cooking styles from around the
world, has seen Luke Moonshine and the team turn their focus to live fire cooking and are
making waves with some of their Live Fire Cooking Styles and pits. Recently, being the
creative mind behind the world’s largest reverse flow smoker with the biggest single firebox
pit in the southern hemisphere, Frank the Tank a 5000 Gallon pit, built by the founder of
Boss Hogg Smokers, Brendan Muhling.

Now Moonshine travels internationally to share this love and passion for everything BBQ
including most recently across Europe and America. Phatboyz was one man’s dream built
off a weekend hobby, to now being one of the biggest names in Australian BBQ.
